SWIMMING IN THE OCEAN IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH.
We all know that swimming in the ocean can make us feel good but it is actually proven to be good for your health.
Thalassotherapy is the use of seawater for health benefits. For over 200 years doctors have “prescribed” swimming in the ocean for a variety of health benefits. Some of the health conditions that can be improved by swimming in the ocean include psoriasis, eczema and hayfever. The benefits of fresh air and sunlight combined with the minerals found in seawater are good for these conditions.
SWIMMING AT THE BEACH IS GOOD FOR MENTAL HEALTH
Being in water is generally relaxing and, as mentioned above, combining this with sun and fresh air makes for a very relaxing time.
Swimming in the ocean invokes a sense of mindfulness as there is a certain level of concentration needed when waves are involved. This limits the thoughts we have about other things and lets us enjoy what we are doing at that time.
Studies have shown that depression and anxiety symptoms decrease with regular ocean swimming.
Swimming in cold water, although not something I usually like to do, is good for chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and increases the levels of good feeling hormones in our bodies such as dopamine and serotonin. These are the same hormones that are increased with the use of antidepressants. Our immune systems may also benefit from regular cold water exposure.
ENJOY A SWIM AT THE BEACH
This weekend I’ll be hoping for good weather so I can get my dose of sun, sand and surf with my loved ones to improve my health and well being.
